Have you in recent times had breakfast, lunch and dinner for Rs.20/-? Nearly 400 of us have it in this hostel mess.
Everyday you've a different breakfast menu. Pongal, puliyogere and rave idli are just to name a few. One of the days we go continental with bread and jam. On Sundays the yummy crisp masala dosa, as you can see below in the photograph. Doesn't your mouth water; mine does just at its thought. For early risers the mess opens only at 7:00 am and for the late risers its open till 9:00am.
Lunch and dinner have rice, sambhar, rasam, chapathi, sabji or palya and curds. Best of all, our mess takes care of hoggers too, it's all unlimited. Everyday, the sabji is different, sambhar contents are different. Rasam too changes its taste. To cool your head the curds are there and for hot headed people there is an option to have two cups of curds. The lunchtime begins start 12:30pm and on till 2:30pm. Dinner times from 7:30pm (for early diners), and goes on till 9:00pm (for late diners).
On Sundays, there is a feast it will be either pullav, bisibele bath or ghee rice with plain rice and rasam and mosaru bajji or raitha and of course the head-cooler curds. To end the feast with the desert a sweet (P.s.: for sweet lowers it is sweetest news if your roommate has gone home or out on some work and isn't on mess leave just register your and his name with the mess supervisor and you get his sweet too.)
To give you a small break for non-vegetarians as well as vegetarian people who love food like palak paneer, nan etc the mess is closed for Sunday nights (p.s. during the examination month the mess is open on Sundays too).
Our hostel mess is very particular on the festivals like Ganesh chathurthy, Shankranthi, etc that week the Sundays feast is cancelled and festival feast is arranged Poori, Chole, Vada, Paysam, Froot, Ice cream etc. (again hoggers note all unlimited, Sorry except vadas).
As for the mess bill the page actually started with it. It is Rs 600/- for a whole month and fluctuates by about Rs 25/- overall a bill of Rs 850/- i.e. the mess charges, Electricity charges, Cooks pay, Cleanliness charges etc. The bill is calculated on dividing system basis. That's one of the cheapest you can have in this beautiful city of Mysore.
I have heard many of my other college friends complaining about their hostel mess in depth. I have never felt anything so messy to complain about. This is to inform you that is at all you get bored of the mess you can directly approach the mess supervisor or your block mess representative for suggestions to improvise the mess and help the hostel management serve us better (p.s. hostel management is a part of college management).
